Two sisters born into a magical family where all of the women are witches. As the Practical Magic house was just a shell, the interior house scenes were shot on a stage set in Los Angeles. The set was also decorated by Robin Standefer and Stephen Alesch of Roman and Williams. Each fall, the waterfront village of Coupeville on Whidbey Island celebrates the anniversary of the release of Practical Magic.

The main rooms of the Owens' house, particularly the kitchen and conservatory, showcase these intricacies well in a few different ways. Glass bottles, vials, and vases are seen throughout the set, and glass cabinets are present in the kitchen, conservatory, and pantry. These farmhouse/rustic elements can easily be replicated in your own home, all with strong ties to the original design. Invest in a large apron sink and white cabinetry, or worn-in features and decor that make the room seem more familial. Sally tells Gary he is there because of her spell, the feelings they have for each other are not real, and the family curse will kill him if they pursue a relationship. When Sally arrives to rescue her sister, Jimmy holds them both hostage in his car. Sally puts belladonna into Jimmy's tequila to sedate him, but inadvertently kills him instead.

One side of the house is bordered by a road, and the other side features a body of water. No wonder it was chosen to be the land where the house would be built. The roofline of the Practical Magic house also happens to be a guest cottage in the movie. It was built with the roof sloping downward in the center in order to make it look old.
The Production Director, Robin, took great care with every single detail of the design and decor in Practical Magic. For example, she insisted the glass in the cabinets in the kitchen be wavy, just as hand-blown glass would have been a hundred years ago. Every prop was well-thought out and planned, down to its location in the house. A perfect product of movie magic, the interior shots were filmed on a soundstage whilst the outer shell of the home was constructed especially for filming. The filmmakers were unable to find exactly the house they wanted in the type of location they envisioned, so they built this elaborate exterior instead. For fans of the movie, a visit to Coupeville is a chance to step into the enchanting world of the Owens sisters and experience the magic for yourself.

Let’s check out the room where so much of the action in the movie takes place…the kitchen. So, though it may not be real, at least we get to see a “dream” home, a fantasy house, in all its glory.

Downtown Coupeville provided the setting for the farmer’s market seen in the film. The Penn Cove Gallery, at the corner of Front and Grace Street, currently sits on the empty lot that served as the Practical Magic film set.
